He led SANU and helped found the armed movement that fought for the south, and was ambushed and shot by the army on a road near Rumbek at thirty-nine.
William Deng Nhial was political leader of the Sudan African National Union from 1962 to 1968, and one of the founders of the military wing of the Anyanya, fighting for the independence of southern Sudan.
He was ambushed and killed by the Sudanese Armed Forces on 9 May 1968 at Cueibet, travelling from Rumbek to Tonj.
