She sang in Shilluk about peace, family and the worth of women for forty years. When she died in April 2026 parliament stopped to mark it.
Viviana Nyachan was a South Sudanese singer and songwriter, and one of the pioneers of modern South Sudanese music.
Active from the 1980s, she sang chiefly in Shilluk, and also in Arabic and English, on peace and reconciliation, love and family life, women's empowerment and Shilluk cultural pride. Her most commercially successful years were spent in Khartoum, and she was regularly chosen to represent southern Sudan at cultural events. She died on 14 April 2026, aged sixty-one, and was mourned by officials, musicians and the public alike.
