He governed the autonomous southern region for six years after Addis Ababa, and served as First Vice President of Sudan for eleven.
Born in June 1933, Abel Alier Kwai served as First Vice President of Sudan from 1971 to 1982, and as President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region from 1972 to 1978.
He was among the few southern Sudanese of his generation to complete a university education.
